Description

The Jaribu Saddle-billed Stork is found in sub-Saharan Africa. The adult is typically 48–55 inches (122–140 cm) long, has a wing span of 90–111 inches (230–280 cm) and weighs 17.6 lbs (8 kg). Large males may stand as tall as 5 feet (1.5 meters). The beak can be up to 1 foot (30 cm) long, slightly upturned, ending in a sharp point. This male is resting on his knees and note that they bend in the opposite direction from human knees. Taken at the Miami Zoo with my old Minolta camera. Info from Wikipedia. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Great shot and interesting information, though I admit to thinking of the pain of trying to bend my kness like that.... Weird

knew that the bird bends it knees like that.. horses, cats, elephants and such have the same with the hind legs of course. I think most animals would find us strange and scary... wonder when it happened that monkeys started to have the knees wrong great photo

Totally exotic bird! I love the concept of resting on the knees — It wouldn't be much rest for me!

Actually, those are technically his ankles, the drumstick is his calf, and the thigh is buried under skin. Most animals and birds actually walk on their toes, with the exception of elephants and hooved animals, which walk on fingers. (horse hooves are modified nails of the middle finger/toe) All those anatomy classes drawing skeletons paid off at last!! bows

''This male is resting on his knees and note that they bend in the opposite direction from human knees''. (You have NOT seen OLD TallPocket's knees!) WINK. TERRIFIC shot and narrative!

A wonderful capture of this very unusual looking stork. Amazing how they can rest like that with their knees bending like this. They would be very impressive standing upright.

Great Caesar's Ghost, what a magnificent patchwork of colors on that magnificent avian, Dana! I never knew this variety even existed! Stunning! You and your Konica Minolta took a super image of clarity, color and composition.
