Description

I couldn’t think of a real (or story) for this image, but since it struck me as vaguely similar to the work of a fine photographer here on Renderosity, I decided to call it what it is, dedicate it to him. It’s almost in his style…a little bit. I took this photograph because I was intrigued by the light, the shadows, and the lone human figure. I looked—later—at this photo and laughed to myself. It’s an atmospheric, moody shot, but it reminds me of something from someone else’s gallery: not quite as intimate a shot, but similar. The architecture is different…but there are similarities. I first became aware of Icerian’s gallery when I lived in Prague. I didn’t get the chance to meet him when I lived there. I’ve followed his gallery since my return to Chicago. Upon my return to Prague, I’m sure I’ll meet him and share beer and photographer’s stories at U Sudu or some other fantastic bar. It was cold and somewhat quiet when I took this photo. I was on my way to visit Corey for the weekend, when I noticed the haunting quality of the Chicago Loop at night. It looked cavernous and rather austere from where I stood. I noticed a woman walking, and I snapped a picture as she stepped from shadow into light. When I looked back at this photo, it made me think immediately of Icerian and the work he tends to favor. I laughed at the similarities and marveled at how his vision of Prague colored a shot I took of Chicago. I love it when things like that happen, and this is an example of once such happening. If you haven’t seen Icerian’s gallery, definitely check it out. His people shots are a marvel. You can click on the link above, or just use this link. I hope you enjoy this moody glimpse at Chicago, and I hope you’re all having a fantastic week; and, as always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting. Oh, and in case you're wondering...I'm not done with onion skins yet.

I really love the moody quality of this, you nailed it with the lone figure: makes this full of mysterious energy. You could easily imagine this as a scene in some hard-boiled detective story, or some Neil Gaiman-esque modern fantasy. I love the color and the light, you're a real master of the night shot!

Oh wow, this is just so good. This is similar to Icerian's work, with your own touch. That light and the woman walking thru it, geez, movie makers take days to set up a shot like that and you look out a window or whatever and there it is!! Brilliant!

This is spectacular, Chip. The lighting and the single figure raise so many questions. Is she running from something or to something? Is something sinister going on? Something romantic or is she just in a hurry to get a package in the Fed-ex drop? Well done.

The color of the overall lighting is wonderful, such a rich golden brown and I really like the spotlight effect on her, almost like you planned it.

I love night photos, anyway, but this one is just great! I love the golden quality of the light, the perspective, and the architecture. But what really nails it is the single figure caught almost perfectly in the center of the brightly illuminated area. Without the figure it would be a wonderful photo - but with the figure it is beyond superb!

I simply had to come comment on this! Its a superb capture and the mood sent me back to Seattle when I worked as a bartender. I worked day shift at one bar and night shift at another, a block apart but I lived on Capital Hill which was about 15 blocks from where I worked. After closing (2 am) I had to take the money to the night deposit at the bank on the corner. It was fairly well lit there so I was comfortable at leaving around 3 am to do the deposit. The streets downtown are well lit at night but as you are starting away from town the lights get less in frequency and the area I lived in was a rather dark street compared to the main streets. I actually enjoyed the silence of the walk (letting the noise of the bar leave me) and didn't worry at all until the incident that I told you about in email. Thank you for sharing this one, its good to remember things by way of someone else's work. I love the shot, I miss those years so it was nice to visit via your photo:-)As always your work lends itself to dreaming, past, present, future and alien, simply wonderful!
