Description

To answer some site mail questions. I was a helicopter crewman in the US Navy. These are three of the patches off of my flight suit. On the left is my squadron patch and my first ship - the USS Lake Champlain (CVS-39) aircraft carrier. She carried 90 to 100 aircraft including 16 Sea King S-3A helicopters. We were Helicopter Anti Submarine Squadron Five (HS-5) and our mission was to find and sink enemy submarines or recover returning space capsules. The patch on the right was from the Gemini Recovery Force. CVS-39 is for the above mentioned aircraft carrier. CVSG-54 is the name of the air group of the aircraft carriers three squadrons. VAW-33 Night Hawks squadron for long range search missions. VS-22 & VS-32 were low level sea control squadrons flying S2F Stoofs HS-5 was the helicopter squadron GT-2 & GT-5 were the two Gemini capsules recovered by this group. Quite an interesting life you have led Dana. I love helicopters and see all that Augusta Westland produce as we are near Yeovil in Somerset, where they are made, and Chard is on their test flight path.

Nice to know those details Dana! I liked the fact that you photographed them on the back of a couple of prints done on Kodak paper. How long will that paper continue?
