This has the qualities of a classical painting, and a superb mood. There's something a bit sad and poignant about the image as well...more humanistic than I'm accustomed to seeing in swords and sandals type stuff, which means that this stands head and shoulders above what's out there. This is super. It's making a trip into my favorites. I realize, of course, this is a more modern image than my initial impression of it, but there's something distinct and "gladiatorial" and/or primordial about it. That's it...this is a very raw and primordial image. I think it's the ruddy tones, the bruise colors and the overall sense of pervasive, enclosed shadow with very few referents to a particular world...aside from the shadowy figure (in denim and boots) in the background. I rather like that element of this image; it isn't anachronistic in any way, and yet it can be seen in anachronistic ways. I like that, I like the way seeing something (and interpreting it in a somewhat skewed way) can open up a variety of stories. Marvelous! Superb. And yeah...most definitely a favorite.
