Description

Eugene Ely lands his "pusher" Curtiss D biplane on a specially constructed platform on the stern of ACR -4 Pennsylvania. It was January 18th 1911 in San Francisco Bay and was an aviation first. Sandbags were connected by ropes as a forerunner of the arrestor wires of the future aircraft carriers. Just two month’s before, Mr. Ely had made the first take off from a ship, the CL-2 USS Birmingham. Everyone helped his neighbor, And said to his brother, "Be of good courage!" Nice work! I'm not sure I'd have the courage to stand in the path of that incoming plane, but then again they are kind of used to being in harm's way, I suppose! Great looking piece, and a really cool look at history.
