Description

Vicars close, Wells Somerset. The oldest continuously inhabited street in Europe. Built originally to house members of the cathedral choir to keep them away from the temptations of the city. The tall chimmneys were added in the fifteenth century alledgedly to carry the smoke high into the sky above, as the smoke was thought to affect the voices of the choir members.

Wonderful infomation and image, and how lovely that a choir is held in such high esteem that chimneys are built to keep the air clear for them. Fabulous! ^=^
