Description

This really is a hotel for pigeons. It was built to attract the birds away from the centre of the city where they drop poo bombs on anything and everything they can find! Incorporated into the design of the hotel is a feature that the birds don't know about. Each loft has a trapdoor under the nest that lets the eggs fall through. These eggs are then collected and destroyed in order to manage their growing population levels. If that doesn't make you go and check under your own bed nothing will! FYI the building in the background is part of the Crown Casino complex. Best viewed zoomed.

great foto, I would like to see a foto of the trapdoor mechanism, arent the birds building theire own nest with twigs so the trapdoor stops funcktioning?

Hmmmmm thats a good question VSVRY! Perhaps the entire nest goes down the shoot of doom! The poor bird probably goes out for just a minute to have a coffee (or whatever they do!!!) and then returns to find everything gone. "I'm sure that nest was here a minute ago'!

Quite an idea, but I too am unable to imagine just how a trapdoor could function well. If they put a large motor at the bottom and spun that thing up to 500 RPM once a day, that would likely have a similar effect.

WOW, and it's more effective (and species-specific) than contraceptive birdseed! In Chicago, we have similar bird control thingies...we call them squirrels, but they're not the most efficient. I guess we don't pay them enough. This is a fantastic shot of a very alien looking contraption. At first I thought it was the pigeon mothership and not a swanky hotel of doom. Stunning. What happens if pigeons catch on though? Or if other birds decide to roost there? Hmmm...the intrigue deepens.

One way to control my pigeon coop's growth was to removed eggs when they were laid and replace it with a fake plastic egg right away. The real egg was discarded and the female would continue to try and hatch the fake egg. That's because a female will immediately mate again and try to produce a replacement egg for her nest. Its instinct. I think this hotel is a fabulous idea! I wish our city would pay attention and try it. Outstanding shot and information.
