Description

"Always look at the bright side of live...." Hi folks, who doesn't know this song poem from the Monty Phyton's song from the "Life of Brian"? This scenery is two weeks ago, and I am back in Duesseldorf now. It was sunday afternoon, and thousands of inhabitants came to the shores of "their" father Rhein to look into this majestic swollen river. The sun was shining, the right time to play a little bit around, as we can see. And Father Rhein went into the game and presented the top of the flood just there... Where I took pics 2 days before there was now water, a lot of water... Magnificent! Hope you enjoy! Thanks for your comments for my older pics; pleaase feel free to send something new, both sides are wellcome. I will be back later. billcody

I suspect that we will have floods similar to this in the spring; now we have a lot of snow and ice. This is a very stunning shot. The light is perfect and I love the water the sloshing floodwater picks out the shapes of the cobblestones. Hopefully the swollen river did not do too much damage! Has any of the water been diverted so that flood levels might go down?

Thanks for your nice comment, Chipka! The situation wasn`t out of control and the ships could travel as you can see in the background. The Rhein has had a peak of 7,80 meters (normal is 2,30m). The old city core of Duesseldorf can take 1 meter more in these times, 2 meters are dangerous. But they have problems with their outside areas. I have seen the Rhein one meter higher in 2003. In the moment all snow is molten away and we have -2° Celsius at night, nothing special and too warm..

This looks serious. Nicely captured and documented Wolfgang! Do you know by chance how much water flowed down the Rhein? Cubic feet per second (cfs) or cubic meter per second?
