A view from the Seine Rive Gauche, as we approach the Ile de la Cite to visit the Cathedral of Notre Dame.
L'Ile de la Citè is one of two river islands of the Seine (the other is the Ile Saint-Louis), the center of Paris, where the medieval city was refounded and in a certain way is the Parisian equivalent of the Island Tiber in Rome.
The Boulevard du Palais cuts the island in half and also serves as a dividing line between the first arrondissement, which belongs to the west, and the fourth arrondissement.
L'Ile de la Citè is home to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, home of the Archbishop of Paris, and the complex of the Palais de la Citè (former royal residence and now a courthouse) with the Sainte-Chapelle, the Conciergerie, and the prefecture .
The island is connected by nine bridges to both banks of the Seine and the nearby Ile Saint-Louis, the oldest bridge still in existence is, in spite of its name, the Pont Neuf, which is located at the western end of the island . Ile de la Cite is the Cite metro station in Paris.
History
Due to its strategic position to cross the Seine, the ile de la Citè has hosted since ancient times human settlements. According to some scholars the island was the seat of the small Celtic tribe of the Parisi (hence the name of the future city), although the first traces of archaeological sites dating back to Roman city Lutetia.
The island was the seat of the court and capital of the Merovingian kingdom of Neustria, while in the sixth century King Childebert I started off the work of the St. Stephen's Cathedral which was later to rise in the cathedral of Notre-Dame. Throughout the early Middle Ages, the Ile de la Citè was it the political and religious center of Paris.
