Description

James Cook was a British explorer, navigator and cartographer, ultimately rising to the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean during which he achieved the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. This is his house! He does not use it any more because he was killed in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779. If you zoom in you can see one of his maids still hard at work in the doorway! Unfortunately, the day I went to shoot this had absolutely no wind to fly the flag!

I'd have thought a man of that stature would have had a larger cottage. Nice shot shame about the wind. What type of flag is it I wonder?

A beautiful and quaint old place, very much in keeping with lower expectations of the day! And yes, if that was his maid I'd expect she is moving very slowly now, LOL!

Small, but fine! I love this historical places! Your narrative is very helpful. I agree with Crabbycabby: I would think that such a famous man must have something larger. The right place to stop for a moment and think back... The picture is very fine, it looks fantastic when zooming in. Fine sharp and clear! A fav!

Great bit of history. I remember a hand full of explorers from my grade school years and after Christopher Columbus...Captain Cook was right up there! Neat shot.

'IF' I were ever to become any where near that famous, I like to think I would choose a home this modest. nice shot, shame about his demise to the islanders

Cook was rather a harsh task master in his day, but I suppose you had to be with a crew of superstitious roughnecks. Super shot!!!!
