Description

The Gillespie Dam is a concrete gravity dam located on the Gila River between Buckeye and Gila Bend, Arizona. The dam was constructed in 1921 primarily for irrigation purposes. High rainfall in the winter of 1992-93 resulted in record flows through Central Arizona rivers and streams, including the Salt River, a major tributary to the Gila River, upstream from the Gillespie Dam. On January 9, 1993 the dam failed when a segment approximately 120-ft. (37m) in length collapsed into the river. The precise size of the flood was not recorded due to equipment failure, but an estimate based on a high water mark recorded on USGS equipment yielded a peak flow of approximately 200,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 5,700 cubic meter per second, corresponding to a 65-year flood (a flood that occurs on average once every 65 years). The dirt berm seen in this picture diverts water to the left bank of the river where a series of large pumps transfer water into a canal that coveys water to the Paloma Ranch near Gila Bend.
