Description
The Moulin Rouge, located in the famous red light district of Pigalle, the eighteenth arrondissement of Paris, near Montmartre is one of the most famous clubs in Paris, which opened Oct. 6, 1889 by Charles Ziedler.
History
The Moulin Rouge was born on the success of Moulin de la Galette, a dance restaurant housed in 1870 in an old windmill at the top of Montmartre. Ziedler Joseph Oller and Charles, then owner of Olympia decided to create a cabaret on the same style of the Moulin de la Galette in Pigalle, at the foot of Montmartre, and to build a mill on obviously fake due to the lack of wind in that area .
Its success was almost immediate, even for the repertoire of dances and performances, including the famous Can-Can (born from the "natural quadrille"), absolutely revolutionary for its time, but were deemed licentious by the public and that they had in 1898, an exceptional portrait of Henry de Toulouse-Lautrec, a frequent visitor to Pigalle and Montmartre neighborhoods. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec found in many local sources of inspiration and drew many of the usual frequenters of the place, especially the dancer Louise Weber, nicknamed "La Goulue" (the greedy). It seems that in 1891 was precisely to persuade Toulouse-Lautrec dancer to leave the Moulin de la Galette for the Moulin Rouge founded two years earlier. For the occasion, designed and had printed the famous poster with the representation of "Goulue."
Gl During the early twentieth century, became part of his repertoire, leaving large space operetta and paving the road to success in Mistinguett, in the unanimous opinion today recognized as the most famous star of the Parisian local. With the spread of cinema in the late thirties, the Moulin Rouge fame, seem to blur, but it was only a transitional period. Even after World War II, the rising stars of French song Edith Piaf and Yves Montand again conspired to increase the reputation of this place that has now entered the realm of myth.
Even today, the Moulin Rouge has remained an attraction for many tourists thanks to the increasingly wide range of entertainment and dancing.
