I am an environmental scientist. A large part of my career has been dedicated to scientific research into the structure of ecosystems and factors that affect them. Quite early on, it became apparent that certain mathematical iterative principles formed geometries that coincided exactly with those found in natural ecosystems. And by ecosystems, I do not mean just plants and animals. The same principles also apply to quantum physics, geology, meteorology and on up to the formation of galaxies. These relationships were championed most publicly by the brilliant mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot, the founder of fractal geometry.
To my mind, the structure of natural ecosystems through application of these iterative processes revealed not only the genius and subtlety of nature but also its incomparable beauty. Â

I love this image Stan, great bulb work! The tree you describe sounds amazing that a living entity could exist that long. Its even older than my wife :) (you might want to duck), I see she already commented so wont notice what I said :) Its so great to see your outstanding posts here again Stan. Have a wonderful day, enjoy the balmy weather down in your part of the world and just remember us up here where the wind chill touched into -50C this morning. Its warmed up to -36 now and feels like a reprieve. At -45 the school buses stop running, so kids get a day off school. That is the first snow day of the year for kids here.

I love this ancient scene that has been so well preserved and I hope that it isn't found by the general public and vandalised. A wonderful fractal and story to go with it. I love that beautiful old tree with all its character too.

Wow! I opened the thumbnail because I liked what I saw. Now, I've read your commentary with great awe! Maybe it's the oldest tree on earth. Maybe it's been alive longer than any other life from on earth! It's an incredible fractal, and an incredible story. Thank you! Linda
