There's something mythical about this unusual composition, Leif. It is somehow reminiscent of the illustrations in the classical book collections of legends and fairy tales, written by Scottish poet, Andrew Lang. These were first published from about 1903 on, and illustrated by Henry J Ford and other book artists. I read the reprints in the late 1950s, which had, I think, new pictures.
