Description

This is my Lightwave model of the Lunar Reconnaisance rocket RM-1. This was designed by Werner von Braun for a short film which dramatised a potential manned flight around the moon, Apollo 8 style. Note in particular the conical 'Bottle Suit' with the remote arms plugged into the bottom of the ship. The seven fuel tanks can be dropped, and the main core of the rocket slides out from between them. The red cone near the front is supposedly a radiation shield for the unfeasibly small nuclear reactor in front of it.

Brilliant bit of modeling, mate! This is better than a Chesley Bonestell painting!

A sweet model :) Going to model something else from the Disney Man in Space series, like one of the Mars ships?

Geodesic - I seem to be slowly doing them! I already did the Stuhlinger umbrella ships...

Excellent modeling Nick, I remember when you posted this on the list server, brings back memories of watching the World of Disney on Sunday evenings when I was a kid. Cheers, David

Space craft are interesting in that they were not designed by those who operated, drove or flew them. They imitate no precursor animal. You seem to have initiated your model and image in a forthright manner just as Von Braun himself did.

One of my favorite spaceship designs of the 1950's. Great job on bringing it to digital life!
