Description

This is my first attempt of a battle scene, I took the explosion from a 6 sec. animation I made that took 14 hours to render on a 333MHz Celeron with 64Mb of Ram, all models were made by me, modeled and rendered on max 3.0, no postwork was made. Thanks for viewing, hope you guys like it.

! Visual art is about light, dont forget that. And lighting in this scene is rather weak. /heey, dont be sad, this gets better with experience/
I recommend place one orthogonal light to give main light to scene, Make lasers lighting up shaded areas of ship, and mainly add one orange light to explosion, and let it paint edges of ship outlines orange. Also, combustion explosions are sloooowwwwwwww esp. on computer you described. I suggest using bitmap, but good explosion is hard to come by. Theres little tip, i used some time ago sphere with noise modifier set to fractal, and wery strong. this makes great mess-faces object. on it apply material with faloff or noise map both as opacity, self illumination and color. This makes rougher, but not worst effect than combustion, and it is wery fast.
notes to ship design
Ships looks - err. like lego or something. maybe you wnated it, i dont know. Sure they look slow.i am allways curious about spaceships having vings, wich are useless in vacuum, right? :D But i understand that this about visual effect and not realism. So when wings, make them swept, or something,so ships look flying fast, and not standing in place, try make them swept, and try to place forward wing in place where it is now nad then in about half of ships lenght - you surely noticethis difference. Add some big glowing engine exhaust.
Note to no postwork
No postwork? why people are so puristic about using only max? /or cinema or whatewer/ postwork can make your images look better, and saves LOT of time, you can create much EASIER and FASTER thus MORE EFFICIENT way. Vievers eye does not care about techniques or programs, he likes image or not.
so dont be shy about postwork, you will see that your images are improwing dramatically and easily with it.
thats all

Gabosamu, please stop spamming my images with "You're no good at modeling". If you say it once, it is enough. I gave my honest opinion, and a decent critique, and obviously you're too childish to accept a bad review. As a side note, from this I can tell YOU can't model either.
