Description

This is a pretty rickety landing. One has to be agile and hopefully not too heavy to get to the boat. The white line at the horizon is where the waves break at the the barrier reef, about one mile distant. Photo taken on 4 December 2010, Sig...

I bet the guy jumped out of his boat, tied it to the dock, and waded ashore. :P That's what I would have done! LOL! This makes for a fabulous image. Excellent photography!

I didn't realize how many pictures I had taken of this place without really moving around until I returned home. This place was so relaxing. One could just sit on a boat landing and relax while sunning or day dreaming, or relax and daydream, or watch for fish, or watch a guy clean his fish and watch the gulls and frigate birds fight over the left overs, or watch a heron stalk the shallow water looking for prey, or watch a guy tinker with his boat, or watch a girl sunning herself while daydreaming, or sit in the shade and have a cool drink, or sit at an open air restaurant at the waters edge in the shade of a palm tree and eat fresh, grilled shrimp and have a Bilikin (local beer). Or one could stroll along one of the three unpaved and ungraded north-south roads or the half a dozen cross roads and check out paintings and local art items set out by the side of the road. Two locals were working on building a new house. Each brick was hauled to the second floor with a rope. While watching them I thought to myself at the pace they were working, and the means they were using, this was a two-year project. At no point did I feel I was a tourist and the locals were after my money. Ambergris Caye to the north on the other hand was considered more upscale. More expansive hotels, more restaurants, more bars, more night life, more HIV, more crime. There were several paved roads, more cars (the same golf carts), some scooters, some nice old buildings dating back to the colonial days, but also more tourists. Ambergris Caye reminded me of Cabo San Lucas, where everything is geared toward the tourist and his money. There were many more pretenders and predators. Yet both Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker main reasons for being visited is the barrier reef off shore that provides world class snorkeling and scuba diving and both activities require a charter service.

I didn't see anybody using the landing. I wouldn't be surprised the owners use the landing only to secure the boat and use the water to get to it.
