Description

African Hawk Eagle (Hieraaetus spilogaster) is a suitable follow-up to my last post as it is as far as I know the other other raptor that cooperates in hunting prey, not so versatile as the Harris hawk in that it is more of the flushing out.. The African Hawk Eagle is distributed from south of the Sahara to just south of the tropic of capricorn in South Africa. Hilly woodland is the African Hawk Eagle's favoured habitat. It feeds mainly on birds up to the size of Guinea-fowl. Francolin are probably its main diet. The African Hawk Eagle also feeds on small mammals such as mongooses and Dassies. Reptiles also form part of the diet. The nest of the African Hawk Eagle, about 3 feet in diameter, is made in the fork of a large tree.
