Looks as if the City of Dublin has launched a shared bike program. Hope it works out better than similar programs elsewhere--where theft and vandalism eventually put an end to what is otherwise a great idea. Nice photo.

Theft and vandalism aren't the reasons Melbourne's shared bike scheme is failing. It doesn't work because it was insufficiently thought out in the first place. It is against the law here to ride a bike without a helmet, so officers wait near the hire areas and issue tourists and locals alike with huge fines as soon as they start riding. The only way to avoid the fine is to bring you own helmet from home, and if you are doing that, you may as well ride your own bike in the first place! Now they are trying to get more city retailers to sell helmets, but who wants to walk around to find a shop to buy the helmet each time you hire a bike. The whole point of the scheme was the convenience of riding a bike from one collection point to another.
