Description

Imagine a crystal clear lake surrounded by pristine forest. Into this lake, a fishing net has been thrown. As the net is pulled from the lake, there is a drop of water, sparkling in the sunlight, at each connecting point where the strands meet. Each drop of water mirrors all of the trees surrounding the lake and all of the other drops on the net. And all of the other drops on the net mirror each other and so on infinitely. Touching the net, ever so slightly at any point, warps the net and alters the position of all the other drops along with the character of their reflections. This analogy is used to illustrate the interconnectedness of all things. This is the concept of Indra's net (also called Indra's jewels or Indra's pearls). The term had its origin in the Mahayana Buddhist School in the 3rd century scriptures of the Avatamsa Sutra. The concept of Indra’s Net envisions an infinite net in which at the connecting point of each strand there is a perfectly reflecting multifaceted jewel and each jewel is reflected in all of the other jewels. This is described in Vedic theological texts as the net of the Vedic God Indra, which hangs over his palace on Mount Meru. The analogy of Indra’s net has been cited by artists, scientists, philosophers and theologians down through the ages and has specific correlations to modern day particle physics. It also describes a number of fractal functions and one of them is used in today’s rendering. The central image in this rendering is a derivation of Indra’s net using a program developed by Ron Barnett, an Ultra Fractal programming guru. And there is a whole bunch of other fiddly bits too, because as it happens, I really like fiddly bits.

This is magnificent work Stan. The title and descriptive text fit this gorgeous image perfectly. I have not previously heard of Indra's net, but have often noticed the concept in water drops. Your knowledge of these complex principles is a source of wonder and very much appreciated. I love viewing your complex and amazing images, but even more so enjoy your explanations and descriptions of concepts i never knew anything about, even though most of them are surrounding us all the time. That is when art is at its fullest, when it is not only attractive and able to evoke emotional respenses, but when it also is able to serve as a learning tool it becomes far more powerful.

Thanxs so much for telling us all about Indra's Net...this is most interesting! Yes, we are caught in Indra's net, and can't awake from the dream of being something separated from the Wholeness(damned veil of Maya!)..... Thank you for pointing so intelligently and insistently at the spiritual essence of Fractals, which are not just beautiful shapes, but, literally, "Le Verbe De Dieu"......
