Description

A few metres from my home there is this majestic tree, just in front of the traffic lights. In my opinion it's at its best in winter, with its bare frame against the sky. It looks a huge, naked giant dwarfing the buildings and the poplars around, but it's an optical illusion. Actually they are beyond the railway tracks, and can be seen only because there is a huge hole in the middle. The hole once was occupied by a number of tokens of urban decay, among them an abandoned brick warehouse, turned into a homeless shelter until a drug-addict girl was killed inside years ago, and the building was knocked down. Then the developers started reclaiming it, but at a snail pace because of the construction crisis. This image and its story made me think of the words by Yeats, one of the leaders of the Celtic Twilight. It seemed as if the ancient world lay all about us with its freedom of imagination, its delight in good stories, in man's force and woman's beauty, and that all we had to do was to make the town think as the country felt; yet we soon discovered that the town could only think town thought. (W.B Yeats) Thank you for your kind comments.

A magical looking image in my favourite colour - what is there not to like ? definitely haunting, like the ghost of the girl who was killed and is still lurking nearby ... BB

Very nice. Town thought...a fascinating concept isolating small town thinkers from the larger society. Yeats had it right.

Firstly, the colours that come together here are breath taking to be sure. The tree brings to mind frozen lightning with it vibrant purple tendrils branching out like hairs, all seeking grounding.

There is a tree near where I work that I wish I could beam to a place more in keeping with its beauty. Now it towers over an Arby's fast food joint and a small shopping center. It does lift my spirits to see it though. I'm glad it wasn't cut down. Beautiful tree, postwork, and light. Very interesting narrative and excellent quote. In May I'm going with my sister to Yeats' Country!
