Description

I was actually there photographing the beach and waves, but got a nice surprise when this guy landed in front of me! It was so relaxed and let me get really close. I don't own a super doooooper 'howitzer like' telephoto lens so bird photos are a bit of a rarity for me. A quick widening of the aperture and I was good to go! The Australian Magpie is a medium-sized black and white bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. Apparently it is a close relative of the Butcherbird. They are famous/infamous here for diving out of the sky like monochromatic Stukas and pecking cyclists on the back of the head! People even paint eyes on their helmets in an attempt to prevent attack! As far as I know they only do these dives in an attempt to protect their nests. Best viewed zoomed to appreciate the detail in it's plumage. Click below if you would like to see the shot I was 'actually there' to shoot before the bird turned up! imagebam.com

A wonderful photo and you are like me it is so hard to get a decent bird shot. I'm impressed and this magpie certainly does look to be checking out the surf.
