Description

I dedicate this to sandra64 because she has shared so many nice pictures from Padova, and as you can see here this church in my neighborhood is named after the patron saint of Padova, written in French, St. Antoine de Padoue. This church was built in 1953 at a time when Manchester, NH, still had a significant French Canadian population. Just a block away at the corner store you could buy French greeting cards and newspapers and records from Quebec. I used to rent a parking space from this parish and the receipt was written in French. Most of the French speaking people have left, and now there are more Hispanics than French in my neighborhood. The city had many French parishes, now there are basically none. I went by one of those churches the other day and they listed services in Spanish, Vietnamese and multicultural, but not French. As a remnant of those days, we still get a Quebecois TV station on cable. At least that remains the same and allows me keep a connection with the French language.

amazing shot! and thank you for sharing! unfortunately as time passes away, also neighborhoods change: where I currently live it's easier meeting people who speak Chinese, Rumenian, Russian or some variety of Arabic or Southern Nigerian languages than Italian. So I live in an exotic place without spending money to buy a flight ticket! ;D

I had no idea they spoke French in NH. Sad to hear it dying out. Nice picture and great history.

A beautiful capture and a sad statement on the toll time takes on communities! Great job on this one, Jac, and a very fine commentary as well!
