Description
Another picture dedicated to a great Twitter friend! This is for @Psylocke_Alex, who asked me to create "something about classical vampires". Dracula was too obvious and overused, so I decided to focus on Carmilla, the archetype of female vampires, created in 1872 by the Irish writer Sheridan Le Fanu.
Everything is played on contrasts here. Contrast between the live and undead girl, prey and predator. I have used two very different skin shaders for them. Laura has no makeup and "live" eyes, while Carmilla uses Aery Soul's Hanyma skin and black Sabby's Realistic Eyes. Laura has short blonde hair to suggest her very young age (she's 18 in the novel) while Carmilla's hair is described as "long, black, with golden reflexes".
Contrast is also between lights: I used a yellow point light to suggest a candle, with 0.75 shadows and very high blur, with a blue spot light towards the heads to simulate moonlight and to create a 3D effect. A third, infinite dark blue light with very low intensity is used for softening the shadows.
Thank you for watching!

Beautifully designed and very well lit. I do not know the story, but I am convinced that it is excellently implemented. Wonderful work and an excellent explanation.

Contrasts, indeed! Very interesting visually, nicely posed, and a great illustration for the story you've described. If you haven't tried them, this might be a case where bagginsbill's VSS skin shaders with simulated subsurface scattering would really "shine" with bold lighting like this. Good stuff, Giorgio!
