Description

Well things are progressing nicely, though a bit slowly in the jet workshop. The paint shop is busy with nose art (more to follow), so I was feeling at a bit of a loose end.The success of the Fw-190 project got me thinking about do'er up'ers, so I toddled off down to the dump.Amazing what we keep around here, you'll see the remnants of last years 'Battle of Britain', a Ju-87 and an Me-110.Oh and there's a D0-17 at the back there and.....oh dear! I meant to get rid of that Tu-95, that was passing when 'Tailspin' took up our original EE Lightning, not one of his better days and the Russians are probably still looking for it....Well anyway, I really like the old 'Stuka' so I've arranged to have it moved up to the plant for restoration. If you're wondering about the Fiesler 'Storch' and the sword ?...well the sword is due to a bit of a rat problem and the Council don't let me use the M60 anymore. The Storch...well that's mine, it's 4 miles to the plant, and I'm not walking. Thanks for dropping bye and any comments....now dare I trust 'Tailspin' with another B-24 while I get a picture of it's nose art?............. With thanks to Anthony Appleyard....

Ahhh, sweet, the Storch...the German brass were fond of nailing those for "official" use only. (I recently saw a pic that featured a beach scene with the Storch not far from the breaking waves as it talked about its use in recon...yeah...and "other important things.") Slow and low...really the only way to fly. I'm not surprised that it's a preference of yours Neil. If you hear of one selling for $1250 or less let me know...I'll wear some body armour to protect me from the rushing masses and offer my sweaty bucks.

What's better than a junk yard? This looks like one of hundreds of scenes photographed at the war's end in Germany. Can you imagine being on one of the teams that quickly made the rounds of airfields to salvage so much of the Luftwaffe aircraft we have in all of our museums today. Just been reading a book about the first pioneers of computer technology (1930s through the 1940s). The German pioneer (Zuse), living in Berlin couldn't get vacuum tubes (thermionic valves in Britain) and condensers (capacitors) that he needed until he heard that allied aircraft shot down over Germany had all sorts of tubes that nobody in Germany could put to any good use. Zuse changed that but nobody paid attention to his work! Good thing for us that the early computers used to break code at Blechley Park and make calculations for building the atomic bomb in the US were thought to be a waste of time and resources by Herr Hitler.

H'mm a Stuka- my first Airfix model that I recall actually putting together properly and not just coating in a thick sheet of airfix glue.

Have been down at the dump myself this week. Have my spine surgery on Tuesday and was in hospital until Friday afternoon. Back hurts like the devil, but the doctors say that I'm doing very well. The vertebrae have four screws each and a compound made up of crushed bone material from my hip. I guess it is live material that will eventually become fused to my vertebrae's bone. What I'm trying to say is that I identify more with the aircraft in this posting than in most.
