Description

This past wet and cold Saturday was the Chinese New Years Parade here in San Francisco. Gung Hay Fat Choy-The year of the Rabbit. So I guess this is my year. View of Union Square from Mason Street. Taken as I was leaving the event and heading out for dinner. If you were born in 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, or 2011 - you were born under the sign of the rabbit. Like the rabbit, you are one of cuddliest & sweetest creatures in the Chinese zodiac. Although considered somewhat timid by more dynamic signs, you are wise and cautious, and know better than to jump into any situation without thinking! Tactful, considerate, and popular with a wide circle of friends Wiki Named one of the world's top ten parades, Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is the largest celebration of its kind outside of Asia. Over 100 units will participate in the parade, many of the floats and specialty units will feature the theme of this year's Chinese zodiac sign. Nowhere in the world will you see a lunar new year parade with more gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions, and exploding firecrackers. Some of the parade highlights include elaborately decorated floats, school marching bands, martial arts group, stilt walkers, lion dancers, Chinese acrobatics, the newly crowned Miss Chinatown USA and the Golden Dragon. The Golden Dragon is over 201 feet long and is always featured at the end of the parade as the grand finale and will be accompanied by over 600,000 firecrackers! The Golden Dragon was made in Foshan, a small town in China. The Foshan dragonmasters formerly made all the costumes for the Cantonese opera, and the Golden Dragon bears many operatic touches, such as the rainbow colored pompoms on its 6 foot-long head. It is festooned from nose to tail with colored lights, decorated with silver rivets on both scaly sides and trimmed in white rabbit fur. The dragon, made on a skeleton of bamboo and rattan, is in 29 segments. It takes a team of 100 men and women to carry the Golden Dragon. This is also considered an honor to be chosen for the grand finale. Rain or shine,

According to countless Chinese restaurant place-mats, I was born in the year of the Rooster. I have no idea what any of that has to do with this photograph, but there you have it: useless information for the reservoirs of Chip's murky brain. And as for this shot, I love it; it's dripping with mood and has a delicious, filling cinematic mood to it, just the sort of thing I could sink my literary teeth into and chew into a story involving...well...whatever my stories tend to involve. Needless to say, this is quite an inspiring shot and I love the light/dark contrasts, those spots of color and the somewhat mysteriously blurry human figure. Yeah, this is superb!

I was born in the hear of the snake as was my father. 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 People born in the Year of the Snake are deep. They say little and possess great wisdom. They never have to worry about money; they are financially fortunate. Snake people are often quite vain, selfish, and a bit stingy. Yet they have tremendous sympathy for others and try to help those less fortunate. Snake people tend to overdo, since they have doubts about other people's judgment and prefer to rely on themselves. They are determined in whatever they do and hate to fail. Although calm on the surface, they are intense and passionate. Snake people are usually good-looking and sometimes have marital problems because they are fickle. They are most compatible with the Ox and Rooster. I sure wish I could have seen the actual parade and the fireworks. I bet it was thrilling and packed with people! Fabulous shot.
