Description

Olympia, Wa. Feb 26,2011 I have two words to describe my weekend: It EXISTS. It didn't come from some corporate Santa Claus. Weekends, living-wage laws, child labor laws, vacations, retirement, sick leave, and worker safety standards ALL came from the LABOR MOVEMENT. Men and women took to the streets, speaking out, and sometimes fighting and dying for decent working conditions, and dignity of honest labor. Apparently Governor SCOTT WALKER, the billionaire KOCH BROTHERS, multi-national corporations, and MOST Republicans have other plans for your future IF YOU remain silent. But many are NOT remaining silent. The Labor movement remains on the battle lines, in Wisconsin and across the nation. Whether or not you're a member of a union, if you ever worked for a living they fight for YOU! Got liberty? Thank a Vet. Got a weekend? Thank a Union. "United we bargain. Divided we BEG!" I had the impression the Union movment in America wasnt very popular (Reds under the bed, Commie pinkos ect). Nice to see this isnt the case! My father was a Union man all his life in the Sheffield (U.K) steel works, and fought many a battle with the management.

@ Garageland Unions used to comprise about 33% of the US workforce. Now it's more like 10%, with mean wages falling by about the same 25%. I see a pattern there. Many NON-union workers feel some resentment because of the difference in compensation. In truth, Union pay scales have only BARELY kept up with inflation; It's the NON-union jobs that have slipped miserably. You don't get what you deserve. You get what you negotiate. We deserve what we tolerate.

Excellent photo! My father was a Union man, too, in the Oklahoma oil patch and later as a machinist in Kansas; he thought a day would come when all workers would Unionize. Sadly, the story went the other way. How bad does it have to become before people wake up?!

@ Ziemer You're right, but THESE folks look pretty AWAKE to me.

Hope they can hold on, nice shot of the group! I can't help but question the motivations of the governor in this, the whole argument he offers seems pretty suspect to me.
