Description

I repeat: three WAYS. I showed one of my typical CG comic strips (the Superbowl one, which most people didn't "get") to a friend. He is not very computer oriented... He said that the style did not disgust or nauseate him, as I had feared, but he did say it was too realistic. He said I should strive to be more like "The Lockhorns"! Now, CG people obviously do well at Renderosity, but elsewhere, not so much. And I read once that Charles Schultz knew this well. He said the simpler the art style, the MORE viewers will relate to the characters. There is a limit, of course - it's hard to tell one stick figure from another. I did a little experimenting here with some other software. On the left, of course, is Poser, and that took me about half an hour to assemble and render. I then made an "Aiko-fied" version that I could trace. (I CAN'T DRAW!) In the center is output from Manga Studio which took me about an hour. On the right is an attempt with Inkscape which took me around three hours!! Mostly because I didn't know how to use Inkscape. I got to thinking, how can I reduce the amount of time required? Maybe by reusing some things. After all, "The Lockhorns" uses that same dinner table panel about once a month or more. I looked at "Penny Arcade" and spotted a fair amount of reuse in the same strip. Hmm, if only I could have 2D characters that I could draw once and reuse, but have them be articulated... Sounds like Anime Studio software to me. It's not really for comics, but why not? Maybe I should investigate. The only thing is, doing it this way would encourage a very static art style. But then again, is that a problem? Penny Arcade is pretty static. So is Garfield. Ever see Charlie Brown from above? People don't seem to complain about that. So again, what to do... Just experimenting. I would like to hear your opinions!! Which style do you like??

I like them. Have you tried photoshop filters on them? It's much easier than drawing, at least for me.

Regarding filters... I have seen some Poser webcomics out there, and very few people use the renders straight. Most filter them thoroughly. But, for people who know what they're looking at, it's easy to tell that it's Posette or Jessi (usually one of these two!) under there somewhere.

You could try inkscape. See this tutorial: Learning Inkscape - An Order of the Stick Avatar Guide (http://www.trazoi.net/tutorials/inkscape/oots/index.html). Of course, you don't have to use the OotS style. Note that inkscape is free, so the price is right. You could try it out, at least.

I do prefer your 3D Poser figures. As you say, they take less time. But look more real. As for the above, the right hand one looks attractive due to the color, BUT, as Bill Sikes says in Oliver Twist, "Those eyes! Those eyes!". They're just too big, as if she's staring, fightened. The lower eyelids should be touching the black (pupils?). You also are great at making facial expressions in Poser - the cartoon character relies on exagerations to bring out emotions due to the lack of 3D-based nuanced details. Just my two cent sermon. Keep up the good work! :-)
