Description
If you look at the image well you can see the minuscule climber on the bridge. This is the J.C. Van Horne Bridge crossing the Restigouche River between Campbellton, New Brunswick, and Pointe-a-la-Croix, Quebec.
Campbellton is situated 20 km upstream (west) from the mouth of the Bay des Chaleurs, Dalhousie, on the south bank of the Restigouche River opposite Pointe-a-la-Croix, Quebec The area around the site of the present city was settled by French people circa 1700 with a trading post based upon fishing and fur trading with the Miqmaq Indians. It was here that the Battle of the Restigouche, the final naval battle between the English and French for the possession of North America during the Seven Years War, was waged in 1760. It marked a turning point for the settlement, where many Scottish fishermen emigrated.
The Phantom Ship, known as The burning ship of the Bay of Chaleur is a definite part of Campbellton's history. The many people who claim to have seen this phenomenon believe in it completely, whereas, others have scoffed at the idea, claiming that it is merely heat waves or hallucinations. The strange part of the story is that the ship appears at no special time and has been seen at different parts of the bay as far down as Green Point on the NB side this side and even further on the Quebec coast. The stories of its appearance follows a general pattern of a burning sailing vessel, sometimes a vessel with all sails set, scudding along the water and sometimes a vessel burning to the water's surface or just simply fading out of sight.

Great photo and historical background. Would love to get up to that area near the Gaspe Peninsular sometime. We used to have a steel arch bridge in town and sometimes during fireworks some kid would start climbing up the arch of it with no rope or anything. Of course the cops would soon put a stop to that. BTW is that a cape I see that person is wearing, like some part of a superhero costume?

Yeah, the guy climbing is the one making the big bucks inspecting and maintaining the bridge. Wow! You sure know your history kid! Because I do not have my library here in China, and I don't feel like doing a Google, let me ask you this: is the 7 years war the same as what we call in The States as the French Indian War? If so, it was the debt of that war which caused Briton to impose heavy taxes on her American Colonies in an attempt to have us repay their kindness for conscripting colonist and forcing them to fight it, which more or less, caused the American Revolutionary War. God if there is anything I love more than good pictures, it is history.
