Description

Commander David McCampbell was the highest scoring ace of the US Navy in WW2. He scored 34 victories in a seven-month tour of duty (23-1/2 while flying "Minsi III"). During that time he was commander of Carrier Air Group 15, USS Essex (CV-9). Twice he claimed more victories than necessary to be declared an ace, in one day: June 19, 1944 (Great Marianas Turkey Shoot) 7-1/2 kills; October 24, 1944 (Battle of Leyte Gulf) 9 confirmed kills. Among his many awards was the Congressional Medal of Honor. The early production F6F-5 is by Motokamiishi. It rests upon my free model of the USS Essex. The pilot's duds are by adh3d. Poser 6/Vue 8.

Outstanding image. It is interesting to note that only Grumman applied for and got permission to not paint the blue of the insignia, applying only the white star and bars. All other Navy contractors continued painting the practically indiscernible blue background/surround on the overall sea blue scheme.
