Description

Considered a 'delicacy', Bokkoms are one of the products found only on the West Coast and nowhere else in South Africa. They are salted and wind-dried fish, usually "haarders" (sardines) or "maasbankers" (horse mackerel), which formed an important part of the daily diet in the Cape, where fresh fish was not always available. They are layered in a container, salted liberally with coarse salt and left overnight in a cool spot. The next day they are taken from the salt, rinsed lightly, tied in bunches with twine threaded through the heads and hung outside to dry in a cool spot with enough dry air circulation. When dried and crisp enough for your liking they can be eaten as a snack food like biltong (jerky). In the mist on the wharf at Kalk Bay. I have no idea what they taste like, not appealing to me at all. Enjoy the weekend, Clive

I've never had wind-dried fish before! We have lots of rain and not much wind. I think they'd just mold and rot if we did that. However, we have smoked fish, which is QUITE tasty, and just as unappealing-looking in that particular form. Maybe you should try some. Get someone to give you a little bit, not a whole fish ... it's not quite as daunting if you don't have to deal with the skin and bones (which is trash ... you don't eat that part!). Here's the best stuff in Seattle ... whenever you get up here, we'll make sure we take you there! :D

I'd imagine they taste chewy and tough... Norwegians make something they call stockfish this way. Take a look here. Neat photo Clive.

Never heard of these fish before I've gone fishing for catfish, red eye bass, bass, and blue gill These are strange looking to me...........don't know if I would like them or not But if it's a fish I would be bound to take a bite...and see if they are as good as my good old catfish.........from the ponds here at home Hugs Susan~
