Description

Due to some site mails and Emails a second look at a sonar dome. This is the USS Essex, an aircraft carrier, modernized from her original World War II design. This photo taken while see was in dry dock, for upgrading in 1966. She was 872 feet (266 meters) long, 147.5 feet (45 meters) wide, had a crew of 2,600 officers/enlisted men and carried 90 to 100 aircraft and helicopters. She was decommissioned on June 30, 1969. She was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on June 1, 1973, and sold by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service for scrapping on June 1, 1975. Once again I am using a US Navy camera, as was everybody else that day, and all cameras were returned to the ships photo department, I can not be 100% sure that I actually took this specific shot, thus the snapshot label. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

It looks like a space ship sitting there in drydock. Great shot. An incredible machine and I love the old photo look too. It adds to the beauty greatly.

Awesome POV on this big guy in dry dock, Dana. I hate to see aircraft carriers decommissioned.

Guess we can't keep them all but I hate to hear "scrapped". Neat snapshot indeed.
