Description

One day before the Americans liberated Dortmund (Germany)1945, the local Gestapo emptied the prison cells and transported 300 forced labour workers (French, Russians, Polish, Dutch.) to a small forest (Bittermark) on the outskirts of Dortmund and shot them. Imagine that, one day before the end of the war. In 1954, 27 of the Gestapo men where put on trail & reseaved between 2 & 5 years prison. Most of the old Nazi judges were still practising their job at the time, and the most of the population were outraged at the lenient sentence. This is a monument to the 300 dead. Not a very happy subject for a sunday, but thats life. Full Zoomage recomended.

An image that moves. I think it stands for many atrocities that war brings with it. Thank you call it to mind! We shall never forget!

Fascism is a pretty sad state of affairs. And it's not just their enemies that have to live in fear but also their subjects

Very interesting image! Remembering a massacre is always good to our memory, especially in this very dark period! Very often people forget and continue to do slaughters!

a dark, dark period in history, marked well by your picture. I'm reading a book at the moment called Alone in Berlin, about one German and his wife who wage their own war against Hitler and his henchmen by leaving postcards all over Berlin decrying the antics of the Nazis, by Hans Fallada, well worth reading.

We are the generation that has the "RESPONSABILITY" to "bury" a war with 6.000.000 of dead men like the second World War and the ideas of a fool-schizofrenic-failed painter-razist-assassin like Hitler. This is possible in two ways: 1) SPREADING FRATERNITY AND CIVILIZATION OF ALL MANKIND 2) NEVER FORGETTING AND TEACHING NEW GENERATIONS Your work is to congrats because belongs to the second purpose...

The sentences do not surprise me. The leader of the German troops that massacred American prisoners at Malmedy received a death sentence which was later commuted to life in prison. He served ten years. We should always work to remind the world about things like this even though most people don't seem to care anymore.
