Part Five: Project Orion Exploration Systems
The NASA 20-Meter design was intended to be compatible with the post-Saturn-V launch vehicles, the Nova or Nexus systems. Several configurations were considered for fast-transit Mars and Jovan Moon exploration missions.
The 20-meter vehicle shown here is configured for a fast-transit Mars Mission.
Note: The Powered Flight Station is shielded to protect the crew during nuclear pulse boost phase, and is outfitted to serve as a solar-flare storm shelter and a powered crew-life-boat, carrying its own fuel, life support, and emergency provisions. The exploration craft were intended to fly in pairs so that in the event of an emergency either craft could rescue the crew of the other.
I’ve put an immense amount of detail into this design and will follow through with a large render showing the craft (along with a Lander) configured for the Callisto Orbit mission.
As always, thank you all for your thoughtful comments, interest, and encouragement.
