Description
This is the book cover to the complete edition of "The Misadventures of Alex T'Kayn, Treasure Hunter" which was released in July of 2010. Since we were releasing all 4 stories in one volume, my editor wanted new cover art.
This was the first project featuring the redesigned character model for Alex, with the V4A4 figure.
This was also my first work with the GIMP, which is how I created the burned-in, thick line appearance for the render.
I had decided at that point that the new cover art for the entire Dirandan Chronicles series would be much more pulpy, 50's Science Fiction book cover style, which is what inspired the design on this cover.
Right now, this is the only cover with the new style but I have plans to redesign the entire series once the latest novel comes out. In fact, my editor was so happy with this picture that she asked me to do new covers for the rest of the books.
You can see the final book cover with the publisher's titling here: http://www.diranda.com/books/the-dirandan-chronicles/

Actually, learning the GIMP is very interesting. I used to use a very old version of Photoshop as well as being able to play around with CS at my husband's office, but since I needed something like photoshop at home, I went with the GIMP. I had used it when I ran Linux, so it was great to find that the Windows version ran on 7. Anyway, the render is a pretty basic Daz Studio render with the old poserworks shaders on (I use HSS now, but my old poserworks was what I had in July). The trick in GIMP is filters. I used the Cartoon filter, but adjusted way down so that the effect is more hand-drawn than the overly cartoony look that it defaults to. I believe I also used some diffuse on this and burned the color in a little with the Soft Light filter. A great book to get to help learn the new GIMP is "GIMP 2.6 for Photographers" by Klaus Goelker. It's been a big help.
