Description

Diego de la Haya is one of the two craters at the summit of Volcan Irazu that contains a small lake. There are three other craters: The Playa Hermosa Crater, the Laguna Crater, and the Pyroclastic Crater. The Diego de la Haya Crater is named after the governor of the province of Costa Rica who recorded the first eruption of Volcan Irazu in 1723. Diego de la Haya is 690m in diameter and 100m deep. The small mineral-tinted lake in its center is sometimes pea-green, and at other times rust-red. There are two marked trails that lead from the parking area and restaurant/souvenir shop to the edges of the the Main Crater and Diego de la Haya and one trail that leads around the other craters. Walking off the trail is discourage because of the fragile ecology. The landscape is bleak and desolate, with very little plant life and appears like the surface of the moon. The summit is windswept, often foggy, and cool. The temperature ranges from -3C to 17C. Annual rainfall is 2160mm. During the dry season (December to April), especially during March and April, the two driest months, it is sometimes possible that one can see the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea coasts in the ealy morning, before cloud built-up. All that ash/mud/whatever makes it look like the lake has shrunk almost overnight! What a fascinating place. I'd love to be there on one of those days when you can see both coasts. What a thought!
