Description

A slightly different look at the same (old) side of towh. The field is a left over of the War of independance. It was created around 1572 (war against Spain) to be able to defend the city (officially The Hague became a city 200 years ago, so it was a village in those days...) Trees went down for a wall of defence.. and it was no longer possible for the enemy to walk 'unseen' through the forest of The Hague towards the village of The Hague (Political center of independent Holland, The Republic and the Monarchie). People played the game of pallemaille (Frech)/ PallaMaglio (Italian) / Pall Mall (English) / [Bal]Malie Dutch there in the 18th century, therefor it is still called "Malieveld" The first row of houses are from 1730's The church on the left was created about 1534 AD. The church on the right about 1880. The modern buildings on the left are a result of the horror bombardment by allied forces on 3 March 1945.

It is unusual with such a large open space in the vicinity of a large city. I can think of a lot of uses for it starting with kite contests!

Chris, this is a fantastic photo of this very historic area. Thank you so much for taking time to share with us the history of this sacred place, as well as the buildings located close by. I'd be very interested in seeing any photos of the buildings you mentioned in the future.

Great scene and capture of this place with a lot of history. Now peacefully, but earlier on a place on human stupidity = war! Thank you for sharing, Chris!..

What a shame the trees had to be chopped down. War is always horrible. A lovely capture with a lovely sense of space.

I can understand why this area is left wide open .. but I think it would be so much lovelier if a few trees were planted. An terrific shot, giving us a different view
