Description

This is a scaled replica, of the Atlas D rocket, which blasted John Glen into orbit, on February 20, 1962. It was the most powerful US rocket at that time. The rocket was 75 feet tall (22.9 meters), 10 feet (3 meters) in diameter and powered by liquid fuel (alcohol and liquid oxygen). The dark portion near the top, is the capsule, named Friendship 7. The capsule was 9 feet (2.7 meters) long and 6 feet (1.8 meters) across at the base, and weighed 3,000 pounds (1361 kg) after reentry. It circled the earth 3 times and landed in Grand Turk. The orange equipment on the top is the escape rocket and attached tower. Best if zoomed! Magik, thank you for all of your work on my gallery videos. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Superb clarity, color and detail in this splendid capture, Dana. And since 1962, other than our Apollo missions to the moon, we've been mainly stuck in orbit around our planet. A real sad state of affairs for the manned space program.
