Description

This mural was part of Astronauts Park on Grand Turk Island. These were the seven men picked to lead America into space. They were introduced to the nation on April 9th 1959. All were under 40 years old, none taller than 5 foot 11 inches tall and all less than 180 pounds. They are left to right: Walter Marty (Wally) Schirra Jr - Sigma 7 Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr - Freedom 7 Donald Kent (Deke) Slayton Virgil Ivan (Gus) Grissom - Liberty Bell 7 John Herschel Glenn Jr - Friendship 7 Leroy Gordon Cooper Jr â�� Faith 7 Malcolm Scott Carpenter - Aurora 7 The names of their capsules are included above. Shepard went first and was followed by Grissom. Both went up and straight back down. Glenn was the first to orbit the earth (3 times) followed by Carpenter. Schirra did 6 orbits and Cooper completed 22 orbits. Slayton did not launch due to an unknown medical condition. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. The right stuff. Yes, I remember them and this remarkable photograph well. Right off the top of my head, I know Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom and Leroy Cooper are no longer alive, and possibly Wally Schirra and Scott Carpenter are also gone.
