Description


Pressure suit for Mars exploratory EVA (Areological Mineral Research), with Kevlar layers for micro-meteorite protection on the land surface, and woven polyethylene layers for radiation shielding. Extra air is carried in a forward tank to supplement the backpack reserves for when conducting extended specimen collection sorties. Rock sampling tools are carried on the hip. The helmet is reinforced with protective cushioning around its rim to avoid damage to the faceplate in the case of an accidental fall, or trip, on rocky terrain. MarsNet and telecom connections are accessed from a wrist-pad for direct contact with arestationary comsats. Some practical experiments that inform this design include tests with a micro-watt red-laser in a smoke-machine filled theatre space to simulate Martian dust-storms. An intense vertical light beam can be seen for dozens of metres in such conditions, and such is designed to be built-in to the backpack to maintain visual contact during extreme visibility.
