Description

This picture was taken on a Saturday morning in Puerto Limon. I arrived there by car from San Jose to take some pictures of the Caribbean Coast around Puerto Limon. Limon, as it is known by the locals, is not a major tourist attraction, and there weren't many people around. These kids were playing soccer, and when I got out of my car to take some pictures they stopped playing and watched me instead. After I had taken some pictures I asked them if they wanted to pose for me and they willingly did. I half expected for them to ask for a handout or two, but they didn't. I figured that it wasn't that common for tourists to come to their neighborhood and take pictures and I was the 'main' attraction for awhile. Looking at these kids faces one can see the ethnic diversity of the local population. Most of the current population of Limon and the Caribbean Coast in this region are descendants of Jamaican migrant workers of African descent that were brought to Costa Rica in the mid-19th century to work on the banana plantations and built the railroads that hauled the bananas to this coastal port. The official language in Costa Rica is Spanish, but along this coast and in Limon it is a derivative of English - Creole. I love this! The kids are so cute, expecially with the finger-signs over their friend's heads. LOL! That must be an instinctive human behavior. Some genetic makeup in our past makes us put our fingers behind someone's head whenever a camera comes out. I have a photograph of a friend of mine and I doing that to each other, each unaware of the other's activity. When we saw the picture, we both cracked up. I believe we were in our 40s at the time. :D

I read the other day that President Lincoln had discussed moving the Africans that was brought here to the US as slaves to Belize.if it was true, I do not know. very candid shot
