Description

"I have done this thing because it is just. Blood demands blood!   We have lived and lost at the whims of our masters for too long.  I would not have it so.  I would not see the passing of a brother for the purpose of sport!  I would not see another heart ripped from chest, or breath halted for no cause!  I know not all of you wished this, yet it is done...  It is done.  Your lives are your own, forge your own path, or join with us, and together we shall see Rome tremble!" —Spartacus
In June of last year I wrote: Before the legend there was a man.  A man the Romans, no doubt, came to wish they had never enslaved; a man known to them as Spartacus. For the past few weeks I have been striving to make a connection with that man by peering back into the shadows of time and crafting impressions from what I have seen there.  Above is a true portrait of the figure who eventually stepped forth and spent the past several nights in my studio. To get back to an authentic impression of Spartacus means somehow seeing through centuries of legend and distorted history as well as images and perceptions generated by contemporary media. In letting go of the existing narratives surrounding Spartacus I needed an anchor that could serve to guide me towards some aspect of truth in my characterization.  A question I came to ask repeatedly was: "Show me a face that could make Rome tremble?"... especially at night, when it was imagined coming over the wall with thousands of others like it. I now believe I have seen that face. I have been far away from working with this medium for all but a few days of this year.  Last night I was awake late and followed an urge to re-visit a mix of earlier works. When I came upon the portraits of Spartacus I recalled how much time had been invested pursuing and crafting a character who felt like the historical impressions of the man.  From today I still believe I have seen that face. With the brief time remaining before sleeping I decided I would try to bridge the character-craft on Spartacus with my primary desire to create photographic style portraits with 3D tools.  The objective I set out for was a classic actor's headshot. The only programs ever used for the spartacus series were Poser 8 and Photoshop CS4. It is good to return here.  I hope that everyone is well and somewhat happy & that you've all found some sweet inspiration in the first quarter of this year. I shall be with you as time and life allows. With warmth, Terry

Welcome back friend. The head shot is even more impressive in B&W, of mesmerizing intensity. Fit as the base of a poser for a feature film.

Out of the fog and into the smog, he returns to inspire and educate. A stunning portrait as always. Your certainly have not lost your touch. The words of Spartacus are as true today as they were in his time, especially considering what is happening in the American Mid-West. You have missed one aspect of Spartacus though. Yes I would tremble were he my enemy but I would also take comfort knowing he was my friend. I hope life is good for you my friend.
