Description

About three years ago, I started getting back into railroading in a big way, specifically vintage diesel power, this time with 3d modeling instead of making actual models as I did during my adolescence. At about the same time, my dear Cousin Joel got the same wild hair up his you-know-what, but instead focused on vintage New York City Subway models, customizing O-gauge (Lionel) carriages and then building enormous, modular, elevated structures (els). He showed me his work, and that was it; I had to start on the subway theme. Both he and I, as kids, used to ride all around the boroughs exploring the far reaches of the city, marveling at the diversity of stations and carriage styles between the three lines, the IND, BMT, and IRT. To this day, the subways, in spite of the noise and other less attractive aspects, are fascinating. So this offering is for you, Joel. Thanks for the inspiration! This scene is of a so-called “open cut,” a section of subway where the tunnel top opens into the outside environment. No such open cut exits in Manhattan, at least not at Washington Square, but heck, it’s my world, so I’ll do as I please! The carriage is an attempt at the R-1 series, which saw use in the early 1930s, and was followed by the R-2 through R-9 for the remainder of the decade. As for the actual render, all models are once again either Bryce5 or Wings3d originals with post work using PSP8. Thanks for stopping by!

Very good work excellent job!! The critical comments would be just get some texture on the trolley car to dirty it up for overall realism.

Ooh lovely work! I have an uncle who'd really envy your cousin's train-works, he used to do that, but decided it was taking too much of his time so he gave all of his stuff away. Now 25 years later he says it was one of the biggest mistakes he ever made! I really like the lighting for this scene, nice and dramatic!
