Description

A Sunday last March in the big lock of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks near Seattle, Washington. These locks allow boats/ships to transit back and forth between the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh water of Lake Washington...without any contamination of the fresh water. How? Here's a wiki with the answer if you'd like to know:) Click Here. Bill "The Inspector" thumb_2180167.jpg

I find that fascinating Bill because locks have never been a thing I have ever experienced in real life. I'd heard of them raising boats up etc but never of them used for this reason.

These locks also raise and lower the boats going through...a vertical distance of 20-22 feet (Lake Washington is that much higher than the Sound which is at sea level).

You know, I've always wondered about the salt/fresh water thing. I'm sure I've read this Wiki before, but somehow I never got to the part about the salt water being heaver! Duh. !!! I knew that, but the pieces never met up in my brain before. Thanks for the information, and for the reminder of a gorgeous, sunny day in March! I sort of remember it's possible, but this year is no proof! LOL! Beautiful photograph. :*

Deep rich color and contrast in this magnificent shot, Bill. I checked out the website. Surely there must be some kind of salt contamination of the fresh water even with their engineering process procedure.
