When I used to live in Italy, there were these old carousels that could be found in many of the parks (the kind with the ornate carvings and wooden horses and carriages). Your rendering reminds me of the cylindrical center (which was stationary) where the conductor was ensconced. He was always an old guy with voluminous mustaches who was invariably jovial. This cylindrical center was always made of wood and was carved with all the wild abandon of a gingerbread house by craftsmen of the type that do not exist anymore. Your image looks just like this to me complete with the central image of the conductor inside. Thanks for the memory trip, Corrie!
