Description
I have been attending some classes in photography, and this photo was part of a class project and field trip, we all went night shooting together. And it was my first time doing any night shooting and also using a tripod I always shoot free hand. My instructor lent me his tripod so struggling to learn that and shooting in the dark was quite a challenge. We all had to turn in 5 photos this is one of mine that I turned in, not great but its a learning process still. And it was a lot of fun, nothing like walking around with 40 or so other photographers and having people question what we were all doing, we got some interesting questions. The other night I attempted to take some photos of the New Moon without a lot of success but once again it was fun and pretty to be out watching it. Have a great night... and get out and try some night shooting if you haven't already you will have a new appreciation for those that do it so well.
Thank you all for your comments on my last photo, I see we have quite a few Gordon Lightfoot fans here, I have been playing his music non stop it seems since I attended his concert last Friday. Loving it though.

Been looking for a hands-on type of class around here, and doesn't seem to be anything. Same with computers .. all they have are classes on things I already know. Sigh. You've gotten this shot fabulously! Night shots are hard, and I think almost impossible free-hand. I've tried, and out of a gazillion shots, maybe get one sort of good one, LOL!

I like this as a first nighttime offering...nice contrast and composition. Glad to see the class is bringing you into new things. The moon was my first nighttime target sometime in late 2008. Took me several nights of full moon and close to full to get my first decent results...used a 300mm zoom and my tripod...but had a heck of a time seeing some of my camera controls. :)

Your first? I think you did a spectacular job. It reminds me of a photo from "Life" magazine. I love it!! Great job.

Nice shot. I agree without the cars it could date itself to an age where things moved slower!

Very cool. Take away the modern cars and this scene could be right out of the 20's.

Excellent photography!!!

From the quality of your images, especially your close ups I would never have guessed that you had never used a tripod!

Night time is the right time........for night shooting anyway. Lovely image.

I guess the Wannabeatles Beatles Trib Band played tonight and Jenny and Bill are to be ongratulated. Great image, with wonderful detail and light!

This is excellent! I love night time photography, and if all goes right, I'll be doing some night shots a few hours after making this post. I'll keep you posted. Ooh, that sounded a bit accidentally rhythmic! Anyway, I really like this first attempt, and if you hadn't said so, I wouldn't have guessed that this is a first attempt. It's pretty, frikkin' good. I like the fact that it's also in black and white, though I have to admit to a bit of curiosity about this shot (or a similar one) in color. I think it's because for me, night time photography shifts the focus on color a bit, and really draws it to the forefront in ways that daytime photography doesn't normally do. Of course, this works perfectly in Black and White so there's NO reason to change it, I'm just a nosy sort of person always asking: What if? And I do have to say that you nailed the atmosphere and mood bit of this perfectly. This makes me think of a movie scene, probably involving some detective (probably played by Ethan Hawke) and a sultry woman in red (or black) played by Angelina Jolie, and naturally in such a film, the Wannabeatles would contribute at least one song to the soundtrack: probably as background to the pivotal showdown between our Hero, Mr. Hawke and the ever-present Ms. Jolie and the bad guy, perfectly portrayed by Christopher Walken. Okay, I've gone on a bit, so I'm gonna shut up now. See what your class projects make people go and do? This is great!

Oh Lynell, I have to tell you: Project or no, this is a wonderful shot! We were always taught, in art as well as in music (classical), that even when we are struggling with a technique, our intuitions shine through. I don't know if the softness here is because you were new to the tripod, or new to night shooting, but the softness creates a kind of dream-presence that makes this feel like a night-of-the-mind capture. And your angle---which you may say comes from trying out a tripod---still feels like a choice, even if unconsciously (which doesn't make it any the less a choice): It has the slightly skewed quality of a world at night, all in order but still a little skewed. I mean, consider: The light in the shops, the reflections in the windows, the slight highlights in the window-signs ("capitol")---all are fine & subtle, as are the broad & sweeping signs on top. And I love the way the signs move up, towards the upper right corner---wonderful. It's like a dream of a city at night, replete with art deco lettering (in the store windows) and those soft-chrome cars---an effect created by your lighting and soft focus---tilting into the night. This retains your natural sense of folk art---your way of mastering compilations of many things in one space (like your shots of store-interiors or store-exteriors filled with items for sale); yet it has a 30s sheen to it, which is suitable for a classy old movie theater shining in the night. It's a very 30's & 40's image, while being very much 'now'. Terrific. Beautiful work.
