Description

Globally, there are more than a thousand volcanic islands. The surface of the earth is made up of numerous gigantic crustal plates (called tectonic plates) that float on the magma beneath them and are in constant motion. They have been eternally colliding with one another, since the earth was born. On a planetary scale, this motion is very slow (approximately inches per year). The masses are so gigantic, however, that in the places they meet tremendous forces are at play. These forces are so monumental that they form things like the Himalayan Mountains. That is why you find seashell fossils in high mountain ranges. Volcanic islands tend to form near Converging Plate Margins along what is commonly called the Pacific Ring of Fire. I have visited a few of these island volcanoes in a professional capacity to collect samples from outgassing fumaroles (talk about stink!) In some cases, this required self-contained breathing apparatus due to the toxicity of the fumes. The volcano shown in today's rendering is not erupting, but it is seriously thinking about it. There are also numerous non-island volcanoes associated with these converging plate margins. I used to own a house at the foot of one of these volcanoes, called Mt. Shasta. Additionally, there are also volcanoes such as the Hawaiian chain that form on plates moving over hot spots. These are an altogether different type of system. Created in Ultra Fractal

Awesome image Stan! Your volcano seems to be venting steam. I am not a student of geologic forces, but I'm guessing geysers like the famous "ole faithful" is a small version of some of these forces at play. If they were not venting off pressure when it builds then the risk of a catastrophic explosion would be huge. Your images and your text are always a good source of knowledge as well as just the plain beauty in the images you create, it is a wonderful treat to look forward to each post. Have a great weekend.

Nicely composed, super. The massive energy in Tectonic plate movements of one against another are one thing, it's when they get stuck and the energy builds up to the point breaking movement free again that is the source of Earthquakes, the energy released when movement begains again. The recent Japan Quake released enough energy to speed up the Earths rotation by 1.8 microseconds and shifted the Earth's figure axis by about 17 cm East, That's a Heavy Punch for sure. Peace

A wonderful volcano you have created in this marvellous fractal scene. I love the turbulant sky around it too and the great colours you have used. A wonderful image and a great explanation of it too. It really does look as if it is going to erupt shortly.

What a beautiful volcano you have created. It is astonishing how the volcano's pressure becomes so untolerable that a eruption occurs. Your image and text are outstanding as always Stan. Thanks for sharing your information.

Great is the power that shows here. How the ground rises, it seems, the clouds rising, a sign 'here am I, and I am composed of an unprecedented power. Great combination and creation in this image, Stan.
