"Tongariro Alpine Crossing... Mount Doom" Described as New Zealand's best one day hike, this challenging 7 hour, 18.5 km trek winds by Mt. Ngauruhoe, commonly called Mt. Doom to Lord Of The Rings fans. Starting point is 1150 mtrs above sea level, highest climb point is 1886 mtrs (2291 mtrs if you climb Doom) before descending down to just 750 mtrs at the trek's end. I did this crossing twice in 2 weeks. The first time when it was sunny and I captured this image and a second time when the storms moved in and we faced 50+ km winds climbing the devils stair case. First time in many years I will admit to being uncomfortable as we were being blown around. They closed the crossing for the next 2 days after we had come through.
