Description

This F-22 'Raptor' is starting its take-off roll on runway 03L at Luke AFB. The '9' indicates there are 9,000-ft left of this particular runway. The 'Raptor' was the main reason I went to Luke on Friday, but I missed the demo. So on Saturday I came back to see it. One of the things the F-22 did was coming in from the South over this same runway in high sub-sonic flight (no noise to speak of). At the other end of the runway he briefly lit the afterburners and climbed to about 4-5,000-ft and stopped. Attitude nose up, but he didn't move. Then he levelled off and stood there and began to turn around his own axis and began to descend, similar to a dry leave falling off a tree. THIS VECTURED THRUST IS MIND BOGGLING! Another maneuver the F-22 did at the other end of the runway was turning, briefly lighting the burners and climbing. It was too far away to hear the burners but one could feel the vibrations of the engines in ones chest - 70,000 lb thrust. In simulated combat, conducted by the Air Force, five F-15 'Eagle' air superiority fighters, to my knowledge none of them has ever been shot down in combat, took on one Raptor, and all were shot down. Everything on this aircraft is STEALTH, from the shape of the fuselage to the paint to the internal stores (arms). The cross section of this aircraft is less than that of the F-117! It will also most likely be the last manned fighter - along with the upcoming F-35 - to be build by the US.
