Description

Please take a moment to view full size. Thank you! This is the second collaboration between myself and the great landscape artist Vintorix. Ok, right off I admit that this is not the color rich and cleanly composed composition like our first work "Return to Camelot". But here I faced a different challenge for Ralph had created an irresistably delicous landscape that was a lovely admixture of the real and sureal. The structure and unusual colors of his work made it was too tempting to ignore. Ralph's Morning in Dehang was a heavily postworked photograph where the distant background had been watercolored into a surreal landscape whereas the he had slightly posterized the foreground while still retaining its relative reality. Also the strong washed blue-green lighting that really muted the shadows created its own set of challenges. I admit this one was a struggle; an irresistible challenge. And I think that Ralph also had a measure of struggle in accepting this composition as he a had created it. Read his original comments and you will see. I rendered the girl with a jade blue-green lighting to give some color match to the background. Then I slightly posterized her and then blurred her to try and match both techniques used by Ralph. Even though I had her well set on the trail she did not seem as attached to the landscape as I wanted. So I created a magical spiral behind her and then copied it onto two more layers. One of these I moved in front of her. Then I reduced both these copies to 20% transparency and then I did a dissolve on both these layers. That created the spiral sparkles that ate into her edges a bit and that locked her to the landscape. Finally I used Flaming Pear's Flood tool to place her in water. This killed any foreground conflicts between the figure and the landscape and it added its own element of magic. A bit of work with Splash brushes married the pond to the landscape and the magic spiral. Ok, I probably bore you with details, so enough- here you have it Jade Gate of Dehang - Roxy/Vintorix Collaboration #2 See Morning in Dehang by Vintorix

Well you have done a fabulous job Roxy, as always but I am not satisfied with the background. I should have gone forward and made a 3D composition! The painting also illustrates one point that we artists struggle against, namely yourself. Your work on first painting was so fabulous that everything else is going to be a letdown compared to it! :)

A challenging and interesting collaboration! Vintorix has done a great job on his landscape and you managed to combine it with your own strengths of style in a smooth and interesting way. Well done!

I like both of them, this one I can see did pose another challenge. To get the character to match in with this must have taken patience. I really like the paths of the swords through the air, that is masterful and really pulls from the blurred background. Has an impressionistic feel now.

Talk about a daunting challenge! I was very impressed by Ralph's original, and you have done a superlative job of marrying the foreground figure to the background. Truly a tour de force of post-work technique! Thank you for sharing some tidbits about your techniques, as well. You have no idea how much it helps us neophytes...

Roxy, like what we have talked about in the past and just recently-- you are definitely an Artist who is not afraid to try new things. I am just so glad that you are so willing to accept and try these new challenges when you create your art. You are amazing in many ways, as you describe the challenges you have met by explaining the details. Just like a soldier who came back from a battle, although wounded but victorious and triumphant that he has survived this battle. It is always nice to see an artist who do not stay in one particular style, one who tries different things to expand her creative exploration and see where her imagination would take her. That is you, Roxy. And I applaud you for doing so.
